We keep Tamworth and Large Black pigs for meat and their digging ability. We started of with pigs as we needed our vegetable garden well ploughed and manured. We quickly discovered that is was really not fair to keep one pig on its own so we decided to have two. We got in touch with breeders in Ayrshire and somewhere along the way we decided to go for two Tamworth gilts just in case we should want to breed from one of them at a later date. Our first two girls arrived on October the 7th while the children and I were out celebrating my brother’s birthday. Paddy was left behind to settle in the new arrivals. These first two soon named Matilda and Miss Piggy were nearly 6 months old so we quickly decided that we needed some weaners as well. Miss Piggy took to biting me on the behind when I went in to feed them so quickly decided her fate. She was slaughtered and we butchered her ourselves the day of our son’s Christmas play.
